Referencing & Plagiarism
Why do we reference?
Referencing is used to give credit to ideas presented in your work that are not your own. This means that you can quote or paraphrase from your research as long as you acknowledge where those words and ideas came from. If you do not correctly reference your work, you might have it rejected for plagiarism.
What is plagiarism?
Plagiarism is using someone else’s work in a way that makes it seem like it is your own. It is important to note that you can plagiarise on purpose (by copying work or getting someone else to write it for you) or accidentally (by being careless with your referencing). Whitecliffe uses a plagiarism detection service called Turnitin to check your work for matching text. Before handing in your essay you will be required to submit it to Turnitin for a plagiarism report. This gives you the opportunity to review your referencing, and assures your tutors that the work is your own.
